Houston, TX (August 4, 2016) – The OU Curling Team began the collegiate season by taking 3rd overall in the tournament. The Sooners began with 7-3 (in 8 ends) and 8-3 (in 7 ends) victories over local Houston teams. The team would go on to drop their last game in pool play to a team from Austin, TX, but qualified for the A Event as one of the top 4 teams. The A Event playoffs began with a tough game against the reigning 2015 Houston Open Bonspiel champions from the DFW Curling Club. The Sooners fought hard, but fell into the third place game against a Texas team with curlers from Wisconsin. The Sooners were able to pull away in the 4th end with 4 points, which resulted in a 7-2 (in 6 ends) victory and 3rd place in the overall standings. The tournament provides a strong start to the 2016-17 Collegiate Curling Season. The team hopes to build off of the momentum heading into the local Oklahoma Curling Club league play. The Sooners will play at the Arctic Edge Ice Arena in Edmond, OK on Sundays at 4:00PM and 6:15PM from September 25th to November 20th. The 2017 Collegiate Curling National Championship will be held in Utica, NY and will feature the Top 16 collegiate curling teams from across the country. Norman, OK (August 28, 2016) – The Sooner Curling team will compete in the Houston Bonspiel on Saturday, September 3rd and Sunday, September 4th. This will be the first time the Sooners have competed in Houston. The team will be skipped by Noah Gordon (Fr.) with Jeff Milne (Gr.), Casey Cascio (Gr.), and Dillon Kovar (So.) as the vice skip, second, and lead respectively. Houston marks the official beginning of the collegiate season for the Sooners. The Sooners are looking to qualify for the 2017 Collegiate National Championships in Utica, NY. The team will compete locally in Edmond, OK and will travel throughout the U.S. The official 2016-17 competition schedule will be released in September. 2016 Houston Sooner Team
Kansas City, MO (August 7, 2016) – The Sooner Curling team finished their last preseason competition in the semifinal round of the fourth event. The tournament began with the Sooners facing teams from San Francisco, CA and Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN. The Sooners then picked up a win against a team from the Ardsley Curling Club in New York to qualify for the 4th Event Semi Finals. The team would go on to fall to a home team from Kansas City. Overall, the Kansas City tournament concluded the Sooner’s preseason schedule. The Sooners obtained 23 merit points during the preseason to enter the college curling season as No.1.
Norman, OK (August 5, 2016) – The Sooner Curling team is looking forward to their last preseason competition before the collegiate season starts. The team will compete in Kansas City, MO in the Kansas City Barbecue Bonspiel from August 5th-7th. The Sooners will be one of four Oklahoma teams representing the Oklahoma Curling Club. Overall, 28 teams from around the country will compete this weekend. The Sooners will be led by true freshman Noah Gordon from Wausau, WI. This will be his first start for the Sooners as the skip. Returning starters from the 2016 Sooner National Team, Dillon Kovar, Casey Cascio, and Jeff Milne, will compete as the lead, second, and vice skip, respectively. For the Sooners, this will mark Casey Cascio’s and Jeff Milne’s second year competing for the Sooners in the Kansas City Barbecue Bonspiel. 2016 Kansas City Sooner Team
Austin, TX (May 29, 2016) – The University of Oklahoma curling team finished as the C Division 2nd Place Team in the Lone Star Open Bonspiel. After the initial pool play, the Sooners were the #2 seed in the C Division. They began their tournament run by picking up a win against ‘Plan 9 from Sheet E’ (Austin, TX). Then, the Sooners put away a very good University of North Texas (Dallas, TX) team to compete in the finals.
The C Division final was a rematch against ‘Broom Goes the Dynamite’ (Austin, TX). Broom Goes the Dynamite entered the finals after winning the first draw against the Sooners in pool play, while the Sooners looked to avenge the prior loss. The game was tied after the first two ends, but then the Sooners made a critical error allowing Broom Goes the Dynamite to take a large lead. The Sooners fought back with a chance to tie the game in the 8th end. Unfortunately, the last shot caught a rough patch of ice and the stone fell short of its intended target and gave Broom Goes the Dynamite the win. The Sooners were the only team from the state of Oklahoma in attendance, but it did not stop them raising the University of Oklahoma flag in the arena that the University of Texas Hockey team calls home. Norman, OK (May 25, 2016) – The Sooners finished third in the Spring Oklahoma Curling League. The 2016 Spring League took place from March 20th – May 22nd with nine teams competing in the round robin tournament. The team finished with a record of 5-3 to tie with Pair-A-Docs, but secured the third place finish by winning more ends over the course of the round robin tournament.

Norman, OK (May 23, 2016) – The University of Oklahoma curling team continues the march to the 2016-17 National Collegiate Curling Championships and will attend the first Lone Star Curling Club Bonspiel in Austin, TX. The Sooners will be among twenty-four teams from nine curling clubs competing in the inaugural tournament. The tournament will be held from May 27th – May 29th at Chaparral Ice located at Northcross Mall, 2525 West Anderson Lane. The Sooners will begin the competition in pool six against two teams from Austin and one team from Dallas. The team will play a doubleheader on Friday night with the last pool play Saturday afternoon. The Sooner’s position in the playoffs will be made based on performance in the pool play.

Will be posted on Lone Star Curling Club website http://www.lonestarcurlingclub.org/?page_id=3652 Dallas, TX (April 24, 2016) – The University of Oklahoma curling team finished as the Dallas Event Co-Campions at the Fourth Annual Steers 'n Beers Bonspiel hosted by the Dallas/Ft. Worth Curling Club. After two hard fought games against teams from Dallas and Houston, the Sooners landed in the Dallas Event bracket. The Dallas Event was a ‘points’ event, which featured six teams. One point was awarded for each end scored, 0.25 points for each point scored, and five points for wining. The Sooners received the number one seed in the bracket by drawing closest to the button. The Sooners tied with Team Nazar (Dallas) with twelve total points and were named Co-Champions.
Overall, twenty teams competed in the tournament. The Sooner team was one of two non-Texas teams, and the only team from the Oklahoma Curling Club. The team was skipped by Jeff Milne with Casey Cascio, Andrew Mahre, and Alex Plotkin as the Vice, Second, and Lead, respectively. Norman, OK (April 21, 2016) – The University of Oklahoma curling team will field a team at the Fourth Annual Steers 'n Beers Bonspiel hosted by the Dallas/Ft. Worth Curling Club at the Dr. Peper StarCenter in Farmers Branch. This will be the third consecutive year the Sooners have fielded a team in Dallas. This year’s team will be skipped by Jeff Milne with Casey Cascio, Andrew Mahre, and Alex Plotkin as the Vice, Second, and Lead, respectively. The team’s first draw will be at 8:30AM on Saturday, April 23.
Chaska, MN (March 13, 2016) – The University of Oklahoma curling team was seeded as the fourth team in Pool B against Rochester Institute of Technology, State University of New York - Polytechnic Institute, and Harvard University. The Sooners continued on to play Hamilton College in the 5th place pool. Hamilton would go on to beat the Sooners and Bowdoin College for 5th place. "Overall, the fact our curling team was able to beat the odds and qualify for the National Tournament this year was amazing," said Casey Cascio, the general manager of the team. He continued, "From the beginning of the year, I told the team we were going to qualify and compete in this nationals despite losing our four year starter at the skip position. As much as this year was a rebuilding year, I refused to call it that. I trusted this team to get the job done, and they certainly did." |
